REVIEWS

Review by Bill Nickoloff (posted on 20-Aug-2008)

Tod Browning has done it again! Just as he did with "Dracula", Browning has managed to bring true chills and creeps to "Mark of the Vampire", but let's not give him all the credit. When you have Bela Lugosi, Lionel Barrymore, Lionel Atwill, to name a few, you already have a great recipe for success. Lugosi as the vampire Count Mora and Carroll Borland as his vampire daughter, Luna, are truly scary. You know, don't underrate special effects from the old days. Those guys were masters, without all the technology to aid them. Using animation, you can actually believe, that Bela's vampire daughter is caught in mid-transformation, from bat to human form. It's positively eerie....for any era, but the real feeling is of despair and fear, that Browning so masterfully creates with gloomy lighting and as in "Dracula", no musical score which lends to the feeling of being alone in a dark, scary place, with little hope for survival. Top notch cast, along with top notch directing, make "Mark of the Vampire", a must see! If you're a fan of the old classics, this is a must for your collection, so pop up some corn, draw the blinds, curl up at midnight in front of the TV, and enjoy genuine chills and thrills with, "Mark of the Vampire"!
