Founded in 1963 as Microwave Communications, Inc. MCI became the second-largest provider of long distance in the United States. It was acquired by WorldCom in 1998, the combined entity being titled MCI WorldCom. In 2003, after bankruptcy, that company again adopted the name MCI. This second incarnation of MCI was acquired by Verizon in 2006.
