The Olympic diving program had been standardized since 1928, with men and women both contesting a 3-metre springboard and 10-metre platform event. In 2000, synchronized events for men and women on both springboard and platform were added, doubling the size of the Olympic diving program. This was purportedly done because television asked for more diving events, as it was an attractive event to its viewers. However, examples of synchronized diving exist from 1939 performed by Olympians Harold Smith of the USA and Farid Simaika of Egypt.
The Sydney Aquatic Centre, which also hosted swimming and some water polo matches, was the site for diving in 2000. Chinese divers won five of the eight events in 2000, and 10 of 24 medals, or actually 10 of a possible 12, since only one team from a nation was allowed in synchro, and two divers from each nation in the individual events.
