As in 1900 and 1904, tug-of-war was contested at the 1906 Olympics. It would again be an Olympic sport in 1908, 1912, and 1920, but has not been contested since. There were four teams entered in 1906 tug-of-war, with most of the participants chosen from the nations’ gymnasts, weightlifters, wrestlers, or weight throwers in the athletics events. It is known that the winning German team, for instance, was only selected on the boat (Trieste) traveling from Italy to Greece just prior to the start of the Olympic Games. The competition was held on the infield of the track at the Panathenaic Stadium, the main Olympic Stadium in 1896 and 1906.
