Willy Dörr started as a gymnast in 1898 but was unable to take part in the 1904 Olympic Games at St. Louis for financial reasons. He then won the gold medal in Tug-Of-War at the 1906 Athens Olympics and took part in the discus throw and the ancient pentathlon.
Dörr was educated by Al Kraenzlein, who coached German athletic teams for several years, and in 1925 Dörr won the German discus throw title. He was later co-founder and second president of the Verband Deutscher Sportlehrer (VDS) and published the training books Wie trainiere ich schwerathletische Wurfübungen? (1916), Sportliches Handgranatenwerfen (1921), Der Lauf im Bild (1923/1924), Sport-Taschenbuch (1924), Wurfübungen and Ringkampf in Bildern und Merkworten (1927). Together with Kurt Doerry Dörr edited Das Olympiabuch, and he was also the editor of the magazines Deutsche Sportschule, Deutsche Sportbedarf-Rundschau and Sport und Sonne. Additionally Willy Dörr was seen in his times as a playboy and a pioneer in the promotion of golf sports. He was the long-time partner of Milly Reuter.
