Facilities

At Heriot-Watt University, we offer a wide range of services to help you deal with all aspects of your life with us, whether these be academic, personal, technical, financial or just plain fun!

Our Student Services are on hand to support your learning through a wide range of provision including accommodation, computing, healthcare, sport, welfare and careers. University support complements the services and facilities offered through the Students' Association.

Facilities on campus

Healthcare

You are encouraged to join and make use of our on-campus Medical Centre and Dental Practice, which provides top quality medical, nursing, dental and ancillary health care, including physiotherapy. Any health worries that you may have will be dealt with confidentially and efficiently.

An accredited counsellor is available throughout the year to help you through any difficult experiences, feelings and behaviour you may have.

Computer facilities

Heriot-Watt's network of PCs can be accessed from academic Schools, the library, and some halls of residence.

The Eduroam wireless service is provided for staff and students, giving the flexibility of easy access to Eduroam wireless services on campus and at other participating institutions.

Library and Learning Commons

With over £9 million being invested in refurbishing the Library and Learning Commons areas, Edinburgh students can expect high quality, technology-enabled study spaces. The recurrent resources budget ensures easy and plentiful access to textbooks and journals, both online and in paper format.

The on-campus library is open 24/7 during semester and exam times, giving you plenty of time to find and use the books, journals and other material.

With over 700 individual and group study places in the library, 200 in Learning Commons 1 and another 100 in Learning Commons 2 there is plenty of space for you to study, whether on your own or in groups.

There is wifi access throughout, and networked PCs and printers, for accessing University-licensed software, online databases and journals, as well as other internet resources. 

Bank and shop

Bank

There is a free ATM in the Hugh Nisbet Building and another in the Student Union building. Refer to the 'cash machine' icons on our Edinburgh Campus map for directions.

Shop

The student shop sells snacks and stationery, as well as groceries for students living in self-catering accommodation on campus.

Childcare

There is an independent nursery called Pinocchio's based at the Edinburgh Campus that students can use. It is fully registered with the Care Commission.

Spiritual wellbeing

The on-campus Chaplaincy Centre is not just for people who are religious; it is open to everyone. During term-time you can relax in the lounge, play snooker or even the piano!

Separate prayer rooms are provided for Muslim worship. There is also a Muslim Society, which aims to support to every Muslim student's spiritual and social welfare and increase an understanding of Islam within the whole community.

Museum and archive

Visit the University Museum and Archive to discover the groundbreaking story of the University's development from 1821 and the intriguing history of our Edinburgh campus from the time of King Robert the Bruce. The Heritage and Information Governance service holds collections and archives of the University's growth and achievements, the history of science, engineering, technology and business, campus history and community life.

Staff have made the archives and collections as accessible as possible and are happy to help you understand how to use them for learning and research.

Jogging and walking

Several jogging courses are marked out through idyllic woodland scenery on campus. These are well-used routes that all start and finish outside Oriam. We encourage everyone to use these courses, whether for a refreshing morning jog or an energising lunchtime run. Printed maps are available from the Oriam reception, or you can view the routes on our Google Map of the campus.

Sport

Whether it's an occasional visit to the gym or a daily squash game, Heriot-Watt can accommodate and help develop all levels of sporting ambition. Find out more information about our clubs and societies.

Oriam, Scotland's Sports Performance Centre at the Edinburgh Campus is recognised as one of the best university sports centres in the UK.
