Any student or 2020 graduate of a Russian or international university is eligible to take part in the Student Research Paper Competition. Papers can be submitted from September 1 to October 15. The competition has been held at HSE University since 2003.

The Application Process and Awards

Research papers are to be submitted electronically on the contest website. They are reviewed online, so you can take part in the competition without coming to Moscow. For more information about the rules, requirements and recommendations for application, as well as submission procedure please see the webpage.

Every field, except for mathematics, has two categories: the first is for undergraduate students, and the second is for master’s students and those who graduated in 2020. With the exception of works in mathematics, papers are reviewed anonymously by experts in each field.

It was interesting to try my hand in the competition.  It provides students with an opportunity not only to describe their research (submitting a term paper is enough for this purpose), but also to challenge themselves in a competitive environment. Participating in the competition gives you a huge boost of optimism and confidence that you have chosen the right path. This helps a lot in your academic career!

The results of the competition will be finalized in December 2020 and will be posted on the competition’s official page.

Competition winners and laureates of the are awarded certificates. Winners also receive support that assists with further academic development:

  • Additional portfolio points for admission to some master's programmes;

  • Points for applications to receive an increased state academic scholarship;

  • Assistance when participating in academic events around the world (only for winners affiliated with HSE).

Additional Details – Student Research Paper Competition 2020

1. More fields available

A new field, Natural Sciences, has been added to a wide range of sections (from technical sciences and applied mathematics to art and design). Students can submit works in various fields of physics, chemistry, earth sciences, biology, and interdisciplinary neuroscience. There are 23 fields in total.

In 2018, the University opened two natural science faculties. A year later, a third was opened. Students focused on conducting natural sciences research from the first year of study began enrolling in HSE programmes. That’s why we decided to open a natural science field in the Student Research Paper Competition. We hope that students from various faculties, not only Natural Sciences, will compete in this field. We are looking forward to receiving strong submissions form other universities.

2. More languages available

The list of languages that works can be submitted in has expanded. In some fields (philosophy, philology, global economy, world politics, and Asian studies), French, German, and Spanish have been added to Russian and English.

Until recently, students in double degree master's programmes with the University of Paris-IV (Sorbonne) in partnership with Le Collège Universitaire Français were unfortunately unable to submit their work to the competition without additional effort. In 2019, Anastasia Ugleva, the new head of the School of Philosophy, asked me to report this difficulty to the competition’s organizing committee. As a result, we managed to quickly provide an opportunity for our students to submit their works in French. Moreover, papers can now be submitted in Spanish and German, which may be interest students who intend to continue their studies in Germany or Spanish-speaking countries, or to those who simply like to write in Spanish, French or German.

In 2019, an accident at HSE’s data processing centre resulted in submissions being lost and the need for participants to resubmit their works. Despite this unfortunate event, 1,802 works were submitted for the competition. 290 participants were named winners and laureates of the contest.

Students are often very modest about the quality of their term papers or theses, even if they have excellent grades. However, as experience shows, many competition winners and laureates from previous years were also not very sure about whether they should participate. But they tried, and it worked. So don’t hesitate to participate, because this is a great opportunity to test your skills and knowledge!
