Six New Things to See on HSE Day 2018

Six New Things to See on HSE Day 2018

HSE Day is an annual event that never fails to surprise guests with something new. Below is a list of six new themed events to be featured at this year’s festival in Gorky Park on September 13.

1. ‘Rediscovering Russia’ Expedition

The Rediscovering Russia expedition launched at HSE in 2017. During the event, groups of students from different faculties travel to a Russian city and research it with a focus on their own major, e.g., sociology, law, or cultural studies. Since its inception, nearly 800 students and instructors have travelled to many different cities and villages around Russia, and during HSE Day they will talk about the results of their expeditions.

There will not be enough time to talk about everything, of course, which is why it was decided to focus on four cities: Kirov, Staraya Russa, Kazan, and Ryazan. Researchers, as well as HSE instructors who have lived in these cities for quite some time, will talk about their project. It is always interesting to compare the impressions of a traveller who goes to a city for 7-14 days with the impressions of a local. Additionally, those who attend the Rediscovering Russia talk on HSE Day will be able to find their own hometown on a map and send their loved ones a postcard with views of the cities to which HSE’s student exhibitions travelled.

2. Discussion Programme by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

In spring 2018, Garage Museum and HSE announced a long-term partnership aimed at the development of academic and research programs for training professionals of all levels in the field of contemporary art. HSE has already launched its ‘Garage’ minor, and in 2019 the school will admit its first class into the Practices of Contemporary Art and Curatorship master’s programme.

HSE Day will feature a discussion programme in the museum’s educational centre during which staff from the HSE-Garage joint department will answer questions about the future educational programmes and talk about the museum’s loyalty programme, publishing programme, academic research, and other ways the two institutions will join forces. The event will include talks by Garage Museum Director Anton Belov, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE First Vice Rector Vadim Radaev, HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin, Acting Dean of the Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism and Director of the HSE Institute for Transport Economics and Transport Policy Studies Mikhail Blinkin, and more.

3. ‘5K to the Deadline’ Race

The first official HSE race took place in spring of last year as part of the university’s 25th Anniversary. The first time around was such a success that it was decided to hold another during HSE Day 2018. The route will run from the Green Theatre to Luzhniki Bridge and back – a 5-kilometre journey. Unilever is a partner of the event.

Registration for the event is open.

4. Science and Technology

This venue existed before, but this year’s event will feature new participants – representatives from HSE’s physics and urban studies divisions – in addition to the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics and the Neuroeconomics Group.

Here guests will be able to observe physics experiments, try on 3D helmets, print something on a 3D printer, and see a prototype of a sustainable residential module created by lecturers and students of the Prototyping Future Cities master’s programme. Attendees can also learn (and see) how a brain-computer interface works, and the main thing, how a human brain processes information. No need to worry, though – none of this is dangerous, and everything will take place under the supervision of staff from the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience and the HSE School of Psychology.

5. HSE.Career.Start

This year, guests will have the opportunity to mix business with pleasure and think about their future career at the HSE Day venue HSE.Career.Start. This event will feature representatives from companies such as Sberbank, Mail.ru, KPMG, Unilever, Raiffeisen, Coca-Cola, Lanit Group, Delovye Linii, and many others. Guests will not only hear about the companies’ activities; they can also win prizes by taking part in competitions and completing tasks prepared by the organizers. The main prizes are internships and jobs at these companies.

6. Online Education at HSE

HSE is keeping up with the times and actively developing its online programmes. HSE’s courses are openly available on Russia’s National Open Education Platform and on the international platform Coursera. HSE courses on Coursera are gaining in popularity, with the number of users registered for HSE’s courses reaching 1 million in 2017.

At this year’s ‘Whole World at HSE’ venue, staff from the HSE eLearning Office will speak about what eLearning is, how it works at HSE, what eLearning platforms exist, and what HSE courses they offer today. Think it’s too difficult and requires a huge amount of discipline? Or maybe you just don’t remember how best to absorb information? You can ask these questions and more in the HSE Open House zone, which will feature invited guests who have successfully competed more than eight HSE online courses. They will talk about how the knowledge they have gained has helped them, how to select a course, and whether it is difficult to learn online.

For a full programme of the event, please visit the HSE Day website.

Sberbank is an HSE Day General Partner. Unilever is a partner of the 5K to the Deadline race.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is an education programme partner.

Mel and M24.ru are media partners.
