Google Search Additional Terms of Service

If you’re a resident of France, to use Google Search, you must accept (1) the Google Terms of Service, and (2) these Google Search Additional Terms of Service (the “Additional Terms”) which reflect information required by law in France (under article 6-4 of the Law for the confidence in the digital economy).

Please read each of these documents carefully. Together, these documents are known as the “Terms”. They establish what you can expect from us as you use our services, and what we expect from you.

Although it’s not a part of these Terms, we encourage you to read our Privacy Policy to better understand how you can update, manage, export, and delete your information.

If you are a webmaster, please note that these Terms do not apply to you merely as a result of Google’s Web crawlers accessing your site. For more information about how Google may find, index, and rank your site, please see Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. For information about the policies that Google may apply when displaying content from the Web to its users, please see the content policies for Google Search. The Webmaster Guidelines and Google Search content policies aren’t part of these Terms.

To use our services, you must follow the basic rules of conduct in the Google Terms of Service (including the sections “Respect others” and “Removing your content”). In addition, you must not publicly distribute Illegal Content on Google Search by using any Google services or features that allow you to make your content publicly available on Google Search — for example, when you post a product or restaurant review that you wrote. “Illegal Content” means content that:

  • incites hatred, violence, or discrimination on account of people’s origin, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and others;
  • constitutes sexual harassment;
  • constitutes an affront to human dignity (for example, human trafficking or procuring);
  • condones or denies crimes against humanity;
  • promotes terrorism;
  • condones very serious crimes against individuals (for example, murder, sexual assault);
  • condones crimes of theft, extortion, and damage to property that are dangerous to individuals;
  • constitutes child pornography; or
  • is harmful to minors.

The publication of such Illegal Content may expose you to civil or criminal liability.

We may use artificial intelligence that uses machine learning that analyzes your content to help detect, block and limit distribution of certain types of Illegal Content to the public. When our algorithms identify Illegal Content, it may be taken down in whole or in part and your access to our services may be suspended or terminated as described below.

If there are objective and concrete reasons to believe that any of your content contains Illegal Content, then we reserve the right to take down some or all of that content in accordance with applicable law.

Google reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access to the services or delete your Google Account, whether temporarily or permanently, for the reasons described in the Google Terms of Service or, following an assessment of your specific case, if (1) you post Illegal Content, or (2) you repeatedly submit abusive notifications in relation to Illegal Content. As part of this assessment, we will take into account the nature and repetition of these offenses, and (if applicable) the volume of Illegal Content posted, and we will ensure that the measure is proportionate to the seriousness of the offense.

Before removing your content, suspending or terminating your access to the services or deleting your Google Account, if we have your contact details, we’ll provide you with advance notice of the reasons for this decision and the internal and legal remedies available to you, unless there are objective and concrete reasons to believe that doing so would:

  • cause harm or liability to a user, third party, or Google;
  • violate the law or a legal enforcement authority’s order;
  • compromise an investigation; or
  • compromise the operation, integrity, or security of our services.

If you believe your Google Account has been suspended or terminated in error, you can appeal and request Google to restore your account. Your request will be reviewed by our teams to provide you with an answer as soon as possible. You can also refer your case to the competent court.
