What is Splashtop? |
|
Splashtop is an instant-on pre-boot environment, developed by DeviceVM, which allows you to rapidly access the Web and key applications without the need to boot your main operating system. Splashtop is pre-installed on desktops or notebooks, and launches a lightweight Linux stack running pre-installed applications that allow you to surf the Web, check email, watch videos, instant message your friends, and place VOIP calls – all within seconds of you turning on your PC. |

How do I use Splashtop? |
|
Simply turn on your PC and Splashtop will load. On some systems Splashtop has its own “hot key,” while on others it uses the regular power button. Once Splashtop loads, you can use applications such as Skype or the Splashtop web browser. You can also launch your primary operating system, whether it is Microsoft Windows or Linux. |

Where can I buy Splashtop? |
|
Splashtop currently comes pre-installed on motherboards, desktops, and notebooks. You’ll be able to find more information on these products here. |

Is Splashtop based on Linux? |
|
Splashtop has two components. One is a real-time operating system that runs out of the system BIOS. The second is an optimized Linux stack that boots rapidly and can run most Linux-based applications. |

How do I open Microsoft Windows (my operating system)? |
|
When the Splashtop launch pad appears simply click the “Boot OS” button to launch your operating system. Note that the name of the button varies by product. |

Can I boot Windows in the background while I’m using Splashtop? |
|
Currently Splashtop runs separately from your primary operating system. You’ll have to exit Splashtop in order to launch your operating system. The same is true in reverse as well – you will have to exit your operating system (and restart your computer) in order to open Splashtop. |

What is Linux? |
|
Linux is a complete operating system designed for PCs. It’s responsible for managing the interactions between your PC’s hardware and software, much like Microsoft Windows and Apple’s OS X. More information on Linux can be found here. |

How do I get on the Web? |
|
Seconds after you turn on your desktop or notebook, the Splashtop launch pad will appear. Click on the Splashtop button marked “Web” to launch the Splashtop browser. To configure your network connection, use the Configuration Panel. |

What type of web browser does Splashtop use? |
|
The Splashtop browser is powered by Mozilla and is a fully functioning browser. The browser allows you to store bookmarks, utilize tab browsing, and use the Internet to its full capability. |

Can I install Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, or some other browser on Splashtop? |
|
Currently the only browser that runs in Splashtop is the Splashtop browser, powered by Mozilla. It is not possible to install other browsers into Splashtop at this time. The Splashtop browser is a fully functioning browser that allows you to explore the Web as you normally do. |

What is Skype? |
|
Skype is a free VOIP (voice over internet protocol) solution, allowing users to place phone calls over the Internet to standard phone lines and other Skype users. Skype also allows users to perform video conferencing (using a web-camera), have conference calls with multiple Skype users, and instant message with other Skype users. |

Enter the Splashtop environment and click on the About button on the dock. The version number will be displayed in the window. |

How does the upgrade work? |
|
The update mechanism varies depending on the manufacturer. Generally, to initiate the upgrade, download the latest upgrade image from the PC manufacturer’s web site using your main OS. Launch the upgrade image and follow the on-screen instructions. |
