"You know, it just occurred to me we haven't had a completely successful test of this equipment."

A miniaturized, and unlicensed, nuclear accelerator, the proton pack is a ghost-capturing device, and pseudo-weapon, invented by Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz for their ghost-hunting activities. In use, the operator uses a "neutrona wand" to direct a stream of positively charged ions at their ghost prey, the spectres being composed of negatively charged ions, acting as a snare to control the ghost, before a ghost trap is deployed to suck in and contain the errant phantasm.

As an important safety tip, crossing the proton streams of two packs is an extremely ill-advised idea and should be done only in do-or-die situations. Otherwise, it would be bad.

Transformers/Ghostbusters

As they duelled a tentacled ghost in Prospect Park, the Ghostbusters ensnared it within proton streams, with Peter Venkman and Winston Zeddemore discussing baseball, before a ghost trap contained the ghoul. Soon afterwards, the quartet came across the ghost of Starscream, who asked to speak to "the Autobot", before they contained him within a ghost trap. Ghosts of Cybertron Part 1 It was then that Ectronymous Diamatron revealed himself and, not knowing the full consequences of his actions, overrode the ghost trap and freed Starscream. Undeterred, the Ghostbusters simply used their proton streams to ensnare the Seeker before he was able to call a truce, Venkman reasoning that he could be easily recaptured. When a Kremzeek sprite arrived, Winston wrapped the electrical ghost in a proton stream before the Ghostbusters dispelled it, using Ectronymous' metallic body as a grounder. Ghosts of Cybertron Part 2

When the Ghostbusters confronted an electricity consuming ghost, the spirit used its powers to gain enough strength to shake off the proton streams, only being detained when Ectronymous - now dubbed "Ectotron" - interrupted its power flow. When Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, the Ghostbusters found that the trapped Starscream had escaped. Ghosts of Cybertron Part 3 To help their new friends deal with the paranormal, Ray and Egon constructed Cybertronian sized proton packs. When the six confronted the spectral Starscream at the Grosbeak Generating Station, they wrapped the Seeker in proton streams which were soon shattered by Kremzeek the Scavenger who absorbed Starscream into his being by way of punishment. After the Scavenger explained that he sought the power of the AllSpark, he too was wrapped in proton streams but managed to quickly shatter them. When Ectotron suggested using the packs to force Kremzeek back, Ray overruled it on the grounds of Kremzeek's partially electric makeup but the line of discussion did ultimately lead to Kremzeek's defeat, though, as a consequence, it freed the ghosts of Decepticon High Command. When confronted by a vengeance crazed Megatron, Optimus plugged his proton pack directly into his systems, channeling its power through his energon-axe. Ghosts of Cybertron Part 4

As the two leaders duelled, Starscream, Shockwave, and Soundwave attacked the Ghostbusters, each being wrapped in a proton stream. Though the latter two were imprisoned, Shockwave's fire broke Venkman's concentration, allowing Starscream to break free from his bonds and flee the area. When Megatron wound up possessing Ectotron, he used the scientist's proton pack to attack Optimus before he was forced out by a canister of mood slime and snared by Ectotron's proton stream before being imprisoned. Ectotron's roof-mounted equipment rack turns into a proton pack, plugging into his gun which also serves as the wand.
  • Optimus Prime Ecto-35 Edition (2019)
Optimus Prime Ecto-35 Edition similarly comes with an equipment rack that mounts on the roof of his Ecto-1 themed trailer, and converts into a proton pack for the Autobot leader. A hose connects to his ion blaster to act as the wand.
