I will not hesitate to beat you to death with my own arm.

Apeface is a strong presence in any situation. He's loud, rude, obnoxious, and intimidating to everyone he meets. He dominates those around him with his attitude and fearsome countenance. There's some debate among his fellow Decepticons about how much of his behavior is an act, a gruesomely effective psychological tactic to control others and force them to fold under his demands. Others just think he was built that way. Whatever's going on inside Apeface's cerebral-circuitry, he's not saying. The only one he really gets along with is Snapdragon.

As a Headmaster, he is binary bonded to Spasma. Sucks to be Spasma.

I'm gonna bearhug this guy to death!

Apeface was part of a massive Decepticon attack on Autobot City, creating a distraction while members of their group stole the Key to the Plasma Energy Chamber. Apeface was first into battle, shrugging off Wideload's blasts, pouncing on the Throttlebot, and hurling him through the air. When a group of Autobots managed to secure the key, Apeface was among the Decepticons who pursued them to the planet Nebulos, where he took great delight in trouncing Kup, laughing and clapping as he slammed the old Autobot off a cave wall. The Rebirth, Part 1

The defeated Kup and several other Autobots were taken prisoner by the Decepticons for interrogation; Apeface was sickened by their nobility as each insisted that they be the one tortured to spare their comrades. The other Autobots soon arrived to rout the Decepticons and rescue their comrades, having increased their power by bonding with native Nebulon rebels as "Headmasters."
RebirthPt2 apeface robotmode.jpg
The evil Nebulon rulers, the Hive approached the Decepticons to propose they bond with them to become Headmasters too, and Cyclonus agreed, with one caveat: only the animal-form Decepticons would surrender their heads. Speaking for the group, Apeface voiced his dissent, but was quickly silenced by a blast to the chest from Cyclonus. Apeface was subsequently binary bonded to Spasma, whose claim that he was going to be the boss in their partnership Apeface immediately took issue with. The Decepticons engaged the Autobots in battle again—during which Apeface and Snapdragon strafed Chromedome and Crosshairs in their jet modes—and succeeded in stealing the key from them. The Rebirth, Part 2

Apeface returned to Cybertron with the other Decepticons aboard Hive leader Zarak's new giant city-robot Scorponok, where he joined Weirdwolf and Mindwipe in mauling Ultra Magnus. The Autobots pursued with their own giant robot Fortress Maximus, whose overwhelming firepower brought Apeface and Snapdragon crashing out of the air. Outmatched, Apeface and the other Decepticons fled into space aboard Scorponok. The Rebirth, Part 3

When an aaaaape loves a dra-gon...!

Apeface and Snapdragon were loyal followers of Scorponok on the planet Master. Before the Headmasters abandoned Master to join the Decepticons, the duo were captured and banished into the depths of space by Fortress and his allies for their crimes. Sometime later, they were found and recruited into the Decepticons by Galvatron, who called them to the Decepticon base on the planet Chaar ahead of his impending plan to begin raiding planets across the universe. Apeface and Snapdragon's old Headmaster comrades didn't recognize the pair, mistakenly believing that the Autobots were attacking them; a brief battle between them ensued, until Galvatron arrived to laugh at them for being such dunces and pointed out the Horrorcons' Decepticon symbols. The two new arrivals then accompanied Sixshot to Shangri-La Island, where the six-changer posed as Galvatron for the peace talks with Spike Witwicky. Fighting broke out after the Autobots traveling with Spike learned Galvatron was a fake, but despite his fierce chest-pounding, Apeface was defeated by the Autobot Headmasters. The mission had served its purpose, however: the distraction had kept the Autobots busy long enough for the Decepticons to depart on their energy-raiding mission. Daniel Faces His Biggest Crisis Ever!!

Horrorcons Daros.jpg

Apeface and Snapdragon joined back up with Galvatron as he traveled from world to world and quickly became his favorite warriors. When they invaded the beehive world of Hive, Galvatron took Sixshot and the Horrorcons with him, and just told the other Headmasters to keep a light on for them. Fight to the Death on Planet Hive!! They were also active on the Twin Star planets, searching in vain for more energy on Sperity when the Autobot Headmasters arrived. Apeface managed to get in a little brawling, though, so the trip wasn't a total waste. Battle for Defense of the False Planet On Daros, Apeface and Snapdragon were Galvatron's guests as he met with the corrupt governor, and later joined Sixshot in a fight with the Headmasters. They were doing okay until Chromedome and friends pulled out a 50 foot gun. It...didn't go well after that. Find MegaZarak's Weak Spot!! On the Pirate Planet, the Horrorcons helped the Decepticon Clones recover the skull key from Fastlane and Cloudraker. Apeface was also involved in Galvatron's efforts to use the key and raid the pirates' pyramid. Mystery of the Space Pirate Ship

Horrorcons Doublecross.jpg

As the Decepticons returned to Earth, Apeface and Snapdragon began working for Sixshot on Earth. They were assembled alongside the Terrorcons and Combaticons to attack an Autobot energy facility in Miami. The duo fought the Monsterbot named Doublecross, although he was almost too busy arguing with himself to notice. They later traveled to Autobot City and picked a fight with Raiden, preventing him from entering the battle between Sixshot and Ultra Magnus that led to the Autobot City Commander's death. Ultra Magnus Dies!! Sixshot continued to employ Apeface and Snapdragon's services on Earth, as the Decepticons unleashed five simultaneous attacks on Autobot outposts on the planet. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg

As Scorponok abandoned Earth in favor of conquering Master, Apeface was one of his many troops seen attacking the planet's fortifications. After the Autobots arrived on Master, Apeface and Snapdragon were triple-teamed by the new Targetmasters. Perhaps not considering the Horrorcons worthy of exerting their new powers, Pointblank and the Targetmasters spent the whole battle unarmed and in vehicle mode, and still royally smacked the chips out of the two Decepticons. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2) When the Decepticons kidnapped Wheelie, the Horrorcons stood guard outside the MegaZarak base.
Horrorcons Trio Formation.jpg
In vehicle mode, Chromedome and Danny zoomed right past them and up the ramp into the headquarters. Considering the rescue mission continued unmolested from then on, apparently Apeface and Snapdragon decided it was just a sudden wind that knocked them on their skidplates. The Master Sword Is in Danger!! Later, while Scorponok was finishing the final touches on his Zarak Shield, Apeface and Snapdragon went with Sixshot on a diversionary patrol to keep the Autobots busy. The Zarak Shield Turns the Tide They also battled the Autobots on the asteroid Pallas while MegaZarak was undergoing repairs. Duel on the Asteroid

Apeface and Snapdragon returned to Earth with Scorponok for his final scheme to annihilate the planet using towers made of crysmagnetal. As the Decepticons finished preparations for their fourth tower in Egypt, Apeface received a communication from Soundblaster, who had spotted the Battleship Maximus approaching them from the Alps. Weirdwolf's trio was the first to intercept the battleship and engage the enemy, but Apeface and Snapdragon were quick to follow. Unfortunately, Weirdwolf was leading his men in a rather bizarre and unstable totem pole maneuver, which only got worse after the Horrorcons hopped on top of Mindwipe. At that point, Fortress simply hit the gas, causing the "tower of power" to topple over the side. Apeface was also present at the final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons at the North Pole. Legends comic

In 2021, Apeface and the rest of Scorponok's troops were battling Fortress's Autobots in space when Scorponok decided to detonate a nearby black hole despite its proximity to his own soldiers. As a result, their transtectors were infected with black balls and ceased to exist, forcing the Headmasters to travel to the Legends Universe in search of new bodies. Headmaster Chapter Prologue Spending time without a transtector, however, caused Apeface to grow tired of having to rely on them. Recalling the extensive training he'd undergone to be able to control a larger body, he redirected those efforts towards becoming stronger in his base form and learned to master the telekinesis that other Headmasters neglected. Upon commanding the power to move objects with his mind, fire shockwaves and bolster his physical strength, he moved to overthrow Megatron and take over Decepticon Co. only to be met with resistance from Laserbeak. He was defeated and contained after Laserbeak and Megatron forced him onto the Galvatron transtector and short-circuited it, but continued his training in captivity. Bonus Edition Vol. 38

Having learned to transform into a forklift, Apeface was let out and allowed to use this new mode to move energon cubes. HMmanga5 apeface vs chromedome.jpg

Apeface and Snapdragon searched for a weapon of unbelievable power known as the Charge Arrow. Equipped to fire only a single shot, the Charge Arrow was still highly coveted due to its ability to harness countless amounts of energy. They located it at the Tower of Omega on a distant planet, but were opposed by Chromedome and Daniel Witwicky. Chromedome tried to wield the Charge Arrow against the Horrorcons, but to their delight he failed to make it work properly. Filled with a sense of triumph, Apeface and Snapdragon mercilessly beat the Autobot Headmaster before advanced on Daniel. Seeing his friend in trouble, Chromedome summoned the burning spirit necessary to wield the Charge Arrow, and fired the projectile straight at Apeface, nailing him between the eyes. The incredible energy released by the arrow consumed the two Horrorcons, and they fell in a burning crash off the side of the tower. The Headmasters #5

Skullcruncher scorponok apeface doomsday for nebulos.jpg

On Cybertron, Apeface was among Scorponok's crew of Decepticons. He participated in a raid on an Autobot city, ending in its ruin and the capture of several of its inhabitants. As the Decepticons marched their prisoners towards their doom at the smelting pools however, they were ambushed by Fortress Maximus and his entourage, forcing them to abandon their captives and retreat. Ring of Hate!

Following their Autobot foes' departure for the planet Nebulos, the Decepticons received a subspace call from Zarak, sent out to enlist the Autobots' enemies in ridding his planet of their presence. Once the Decepticons traveled to the alien world, they met with the Nebulans, who they considered beneath their notice. Broken Glass! During the meeting, Apeface became lost in thought, wondering on how those he would meet on this new world would react to his ugly appearance, and even uglier actions. Doomsday for Nebulos Apeface joined his leader in his demand to the Nebulans for them to turn over the Autobots' heads, and stormed the city of Koraja to seize them. Broken Glass! As if in answer to Apeface's earlier ponderings, Stylor immediately noticed the Decepticon's poor hygiene and disgusting habit of spitting-while-talking upon his initial approach. Stylor's Story The Autobots retaliated, and unleashed their new creations, the Headmasters. Unable to compete against the upgrated Autobots' newfound might, Scorponok was forced to call his troops to retreat. Broken Glass! Stylor's Story

LoveandSteel horrorcons.jpg

Apeface and his pal Snapdragon had fun terrorizing the natives in the city of Splendora alongside the Terrorcons until they were easily dispatched by two Autobot Headmasters. Though Scorponok berated the two for their failure, this latest defeat proved enough for him to reconsider the merits of the Headmaster process. Soon, Apeface was one of six Decepticons who underwent binary bonding with the organic Nebulans to become a Headmaster. He became bonded to Spasma, improving his battle prowess significantly. The Decepticons faced off against Fortress Maximus's soldiers once more, this time Apeface pouncing on the Autobots' leader himself. Though Maximus batted him away almost immediately, Apeface proved instrumental in securing a Decepticon victory; he downed an incoming Nebulan transport, and while the Autobots busied themselves rescuing the passengers, the Decepticons positioned themselves to outflank their enemies and bring them down. Love and Steel! Apeface and the others continued to terrorize Nebulos, one of their subsequent missions taking them to the Mercury Gardens of Melanossus, where he helped in slaying many Autobots. Those few that survived the slaughter were forced to flee back into Nebulos's swamps. Brothers in Armor!!

When the Autobot Headmasters attempted to rescue the Autobot Targetmasters from the Decepticons, their evil counterparts were sent out after them to feign a defeat, and lure them into an ambush helmed by Scorponok. During the initial fight, Apeface and Snapdragon chased Highbrow through the air, until the latter was shot down by Chromedome. The rest of the group were shortly thereafter "defeated," allowing Scorponok to eventually corner the Autobots within the Fortress of Despair. Worlds Apart!

AllintheMinds apeface jetmode.jpg

Apeface later joined Scorponok and watched his faux duel with Fortress Maximus; a diversion set-up so that the Decepticons could steal a fuel convertor. Once Triggerhappy had secured the device, the duel was brought to a premature end, and Apeface helped Snapdragon fly Scorponok to safety. The Final Conflict

The events in this UK story differ in significant ways to the Headmasters mini-series.

The Decepticons soon left for Earth, pursuing Fortress Maximus's Autobots yet again. Brothers in Armor!! The Decepticons met the Autobots on Earth and were defeated in battle. Trial by Fire!

He'll beat you with the oily end.

Apeface and Snapdragon were brought by Scorponok as back-up for a mission to lure and trap the Autobot Highbrow so that he could be hypnotized by Mindwipe. When Highbrow managed to wound Scorponok, the two Horrorcons entered the scene, firing on Highbrow from above in their jet modes. Highbrow thought to lose them in the maze of the surrounding forest, but Apeface, just dumb enough to fail to recognize his own lack of maneuverability, tried to give chase. He smashed into one tree after another, until a head-on collision with one knocked him out of the chase. All in the Minds!

Scorponok's crew later entered conflict with Ratbat's crew over the potential ownership of the Underbase. During the battle, Apeface learned a valuable truth about himself: while he wasn't quite willing to rip off his own arm and beat someone to death with it, he was also not one to ignore an opportunity when it presented itself. Rampage wound up being on the receiving end of the beat-down after having thus disarmed the Horrorcon. Cold War! Apeface later attacked the Autobots who joined the battle; the Horrorcons went off to attack Fortress Maximus, only to be shot off by Blaster. Dark Star

Apeface was teleported to Cybertron along with countless other Transformers, where he somehow found a tasty banana to keep himself occupied while some stupid Autobot yammered on about dark gods and creators and stuff. The Void! When the aforementioned dark god showed up at Cybertron a short while later, Apeface wasn't so amused. Like countless others, he fled in a panic. On the Edge of Extinction! GRUNK!

Ape Face [sic] was one of the last few Decepticons remaining behind on Tau-Ursa when the Autobots arrived. He was investigating a crashed spaceship when he found a voice recording. Deducing that if the tape spoke it must be important, he resolved to take it to Scorponok.

At this moment he was attacked by Blurr and Hot Rod who were intent on keeping him from escaping with the information. The triple changer loudly declared his intention to smash them (with a mighty cry of "GRUUUNK!"), and after knocking them to the ground similarly announced he was transforming into jet mode. He was too slow however, and Blurr seized his arm, prising the tape from his hand before escaping. This made him mad. The War Against the Destructons, Chapter 1 of 3

The Decepticons, including Apeface, went to Nebulos in search of energy. When they found that there was an endless supply of cosmic energy available at the pole, they moved Scorponok there. The Autobots soon attacked, and Apeface and Skullcruncher were sent out to mount a defense, only to find that the ice under their feet was melting and slippery thanks to the Autobots' lasers. A few moments later, the whole base sank. Decepticons at the Pole

Aware that the Autobots were up to something, Apeface's first instinct was to destroy whatever it was. Cyclonus soon determined that the Autobots had built an oil pipeline, and had Apeface and Snapdragon tear up a part of it. The Decepticons proceeded to lay in wait and attempted to ambush Kup and Highbrow when the pair repaired the pipe. The Autobots managed to get away however, when the Decepticons slipped over on the spilled oil. Autobots Strike Oil

Toys

The Transformers

(thumbnail)
Not a bad toy for a guy whose Spanish name is "Wimpus".
  • Apeface with Spasma (Headmaster Horrorcon, 1987)
Released in the fourth year of Hasbro's US The Transformers toyline (third year in Europe and in Takara's Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers line), Apeface turns into both a Cybertronic jet and a robotic gorilla. His Headmaster partner, Spasma, can ride inside the jet's cockpit.
As Apeface is a triple changer, Spasma similarly has triple functions, forming both the robot mode face and the gorilla mode face. This beast mode has a relatively wide range of articulation for a "Generation 1" beast, but has some minor problems with balance, which limits poses. Apeface's gorilla mode can be placed on all fours, but that results in his head staring at the ground. On the other hand, the naturally curved hook shape of his gorilla fists allows him to hang from a string or anything else it can snag.
In robot mode, like all Headmaster toys, Apeface has a flip-down panel on his chest which covers a spring-loaded mini-Tech-Spec-meter which gives readouts for Speed, Strength, and Intelligence. The tumblers are activated when Spasma (or any other Headmaster unit) is plugged into his neck socket. Apeface is very back-heavy due to most of the fighter jet mode ending up on his back. The jet's vertical stabilizers detach to form a shield that can be held in Apeface's hands or attached to his shoulder.
As is common for original-series toys, Apeface's instructions disagree with his stock photography and package art over the orientation of his stickers.[2]

Titans Return

Call me a wimp again, and I'll take over your bodies.
  • Apeface (Titan Master, 2016)
  • Accessories: Gorilla/jet/gun vehicle
  • Known designers: John Warden (Hasbro)
Part of the second wave of Titans Return Titan Masters, Apeface can transform from a small robot into an toy-based Apeface head compatible with any Deluxe-or-larger Titans Return figure. He is packaged with a gorilla accessory which Apeface can ride in robot mode, and which can also transform into a 5 mm post gun for larger figures to wield, or combine with Apeface to form a jet. Apeface, the gorilla, and their combined jet form are based on Apeface's original Generation 1 robot, gorilla, and jet modes respectively.
As with all Titan Master vehicle accessories, care must be taken with the gun mode's handle: the handle fits tightly in many 5 mm-compatible closed hands, and combined with the handle's lack of metal pin running through the joint, removing it by force causes the handle to pop out of the joint.
Apeface was reissued for the fifth wave of Titan Masters alongside Ptero, Overboard, and the new Ramhorn.
His vehicle was redecoed as Legends Weirdwolf's Rarigo accessory and again as Convobat's Ape X Arms accessory. Apeface's Titan Master would've been redecoed as Skyfall's head for the BotCon 2017 "Action on Hydrus Four" set and Armada Jetfire's Titan Master that never came to be.
The vehicle and its redecoes were repurposed as the Assistant Corps in the Generations Selects Special Comic.

Who you calling a wimp now?
  • Apeface (Voyager Class, 2020)
  • Hasbro ID number: WFC-S50
  • TakaraTomy ID number: SG-46
  • TakaraTomy release date: February 22, 2020
  • Hidden message code: TURBOWORM
  • Accessories: "SA Sonic Boom Blaster," "EM Electro Shield," Titan Master Spasma
  • Known designers: AJ Piejko-Brown (packaging)
Released in the fifth and final wave of Siege Voyagers, Apeface transforms from robot to gorilla to jet. He includes the "SA Sonic Boom Blaster" and "EM Electro Shield," a gun and a shield forming his jet tailfins, respectively, both compatible with the C.O.M.B.A.T. System. He also comes with Spasma, who can form his robot and gorilla heads and pilot his jet mode. Apeface also features "battle damage" paint applications on his front shoulders, nosecone, and legs, as well as multiple hardpoints all over himself and his weapons to accommodate "Fire Blasts" from the Battle Masters assortment, which can be used to simulate blaster fire or explosions. Because of design limits, Spasma only forms the top half of Apeface's gorilla head, while the lower half is a separate piece attached to Apeface himself. Apeface is also the only Voyager class figure in the Siege line without a waist swivel.
The jet mode instructions say to seat Spasma in the rear hatch, behind the wings, but in an undocumented feature it is possible to sit Spasma folded upright in the gorilla lower head so he can fit inside the main cockpit. Forming the gorilla mode or jet mode requires fairly intricate tab work, with the instructions being of little use. Make sure the clip beneath the gorilla lower head fastens around the hinge at the base of the jet cockpit. Due to this intricate tabbing system, Apeface's white plastic is actually super-dense nylon, which is necessary to prevent the tabs from breaking.
Spasma is not named anywhere in this toy's packaging or instructions, only named such by the toy's Hasbro Pulse listing. The Titan Master is referred to as "Apeface's head" in the instructions.
Due to reusing the Titans Return system, Apeface can use any Titan Master or Prime Master. If one chooses, Apeface's robot mode head can be swapped with the above Titans Return figure or Legends figure, leaving his original head for his gorilla form. However, as Apeface does not have the additional spring-out parts that Voyager-sized Titans Return figures had, his robot mode head has the optical illusion of appearing to be quite small for his body when it is not.
The tooling that made Apeface compatible with other Titans Masters also led to packaging mistakes, as the Spasma Titan Master (which uses each side for a different face) needs to have its head rotated 180 degrees to connect to the robot form. This step was omitted in packaging causing many early releases to have the Apeface head bouncing around loose in the packaging. The packaging mistake did not negatively affect the actual toy.
Care should be taken when plugging his EM Electro Shield into his back in gorilla and jet mode, as the peg's diameter is just so that plugging it into the corresponding port would be a very snug fit. Additionally, said port is quite deep, which can make the shield extremely difficult to remove if pushed in too far. Owing to these issues, several fans have reported the shield's peg easily breaking after plugging it into the port and later attempting to remove it. This issue can be addressed by either sanding down the peg so that it does not fit as snugly in the port, or inserting a drill bit into the port and manually twisting it slightly to scrape away some of the plastic inside to widen said port.
Though designated for a first quarter 2020 release, Apeface reached U.S. store shelves in late 2019.

In order to depict the Triple Changer nature of the character, Raider Apeface, Espionage-Commando is a folding card, with both Alt Modes depicted when the card is folded in half, and Bot Mode depicted when the card is unfolded.
The card's Bot Mode artwork is reused from the Siege Apeface toy, while both Alt Modes receive original artwork, with lines by Dan Khanna and colors by Alex Tarca.
Raider Apeface, Espionage-Commando is notable as being the first character in the game with the ''Beast'' trait.

Notes

  • One of the many confusing glitches in "The Rebirth" is the fact that, while Krunk and Spasma were clearly designed to transform into both the robot and animal heads of their partners, the Horrorcons retained their beast mode heads even when their Nebulan partners were separated from them.
  • In the Japanese The Headmasters series, Spasma does not exist as a separate entity from Apeface; like all Headmasters, the large robot is just a lifeless Transtector body controlled entirely by the head unit. However, Apeface's head unit is still called "Spasma" when separated from the larger robot body, even though it's the same guy!
  • Apeface's character models were designed by Marvel Productions, and as such, no rear-view models for any of his or Spasma's modes were made, as Toei's artists were typically the ones in charge of designing rear-view models. Being one of the few sets of models to be used in both "The Rebirth" and The Headmasters, a Toei artist by the name of "Miki" (full name currently unknown) was assigned the task of designing rear-view models for Apeface (and "Spasma") for The Headmasters cartoon. This is why they are never shown from behind in "The Rebirth", the commercial animations, and the Marvel comics—and if they are, it's usually improvised.
  • Apeface was the only character to use the word "puke" in the entirety of the original Transformers cartoon. That's got to be some kind of feat, right?
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub, he calls himself "El gorila invencible" (the invincible gorilla).
