Born 4 November 1905 in Pallion, Sunderland, County Durham [registered in Sunderland, December 1905].
Attended Diamond Hall Primary School in Pallion.

Census Notes

According to the 1911 census, Alfred is the third of six children (seven children in total, another had tragically died before 1911) to Alfred and Margaret. The eight of them live at 4 Garnet Street in the Pallion area of Sunderland. His father is a shipyard (hand) driller.

According to the 1939 register, Alfred is a general labourer, and 'was a professional footballer' married to Eva. They are living at 52 Dalton Fold Road in Huddersfield.

Club Career

Club(s) Started his career playing with Sunderland West End FCdeamateur for Durham City AFC in 1926. Huddersfield Town AFC signed Young, alongside Robert Cowan, as professionals, on 24 January 1927. Tottenham Hotspur FC were constantly linked with the signing of the Huddersfield captain. In March 1936, negotiatiosn broke down when it seemed certain a move would happen. Then, in December 1938, forcing the then Spurs' manager, Peter McWilliam, to strenuously deny the move. He remained at Leeds Road, scoring six goals in 283 league outings. Guested for Tranmere Rovers FC in early 1941 and then he represented the RAF later in the year and 1942. He was a guest for Rochdale AFC in 1944. He was transferred to York City FC on 24 November 1945. After captaining the side, he retired a year later.

Distinctions One of the first footballers to be turned into a wax dummy, when Madam Tussauds museum made a bust of him for an exhibition in 1938.

Management Career

Club(s) Turned his hand to coaching in Denmark between 1946 and 1948, Køge Bk and Sk Brann. Appointed as a coach back at Huddersfield Town AFC in July 1948 until his resignation on 28 May 1952. Young applied for the Barnsley FC manager's vacancy, but it proved unsuccessful. After taking time out of the game, he returned to Denmark, as caretaker manager, and then with Køge Bk and Esbjerg fB. He was then appointed manager at Bradford FC on 30 December 1957. He again returned to Huddersfield Town AFC as their coach in December 1960. Then a Chief Scout 1964 until his retirement in July 1965.
