"The Case of Harry Lilley
"When the other day, the sad case of the
old Sheffield United full back, Harry Lilley, was mentioned here, it was
upon information supplied by a letter from a Sheffield sympathiser. Since
then I regret to learn that Lilley died on August 30th last, leaving a
widow quite unprovided for, what money the old player had been able to put
by having all gone during his long illness.
It will thus be seen that, though Lilley himself has gone, there still
remains room for any help which may be forthcoming; for though Cresswell
friends have been and are doing what they can, their efforts cannot cover
the merits of the case. LOOKER-ON"
- The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Friday, 14 September 1900.
"The Case of Harry Lilley
"By
the way, speaking of the Sheffield United Club reminds me that it has been
decided to make a collection round the ground on Saturday for the benefit
of the family of poor Harry Lilley. The particulars of what is a very sad
case indeed have already been set ot here, and it is to be hoped that the
generous action of the United directorate will result in a good sum being
collected. There will be many present to-morrow who never saw Lilley play;
for their sakes it may be mentioned that the old Staveley man was a very
fine and scrupulously fair back, and that to him in no small measure
belongs the credit of the
rapid rise which the
club made in football."

The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Friday, 28 September
1900. |

"Football
enthusiasts will learn with regret that Harry Lilley, the popular back of
the Sheffield United Club, formerly of the Staveley Club, and who last
