April 1899 in Cannes, bekleidete seit 1860 an Wilsons Stelle die Professur für Sanskrit in Oxford, Wiederholt bereiste er Indien, gründete das Indian Institute in Oxford und wurde 1886 in den Ritterstand erhoben.
