Commander Frederick Elton was born on 3 May 1854.2 He was the son of Frederick Bayard Elton and Caroline Elizabeth d'Alberdyhill, Baroness d'Alberdyhill.2 He married Ernestine White, daughter of Ernest White, on 29 July 1893.2 He died on 2 November 1922 at age 68.2
He fought in the South African War in 1879.1 He gained the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.2 He was awarded the Medal for saving life at sea.1 He lived at Whitestaunton Manor, Somerset, EnglandG.1

Major Bruce Middleton Hope Shand was born on 22 January 1917.2 He was the son of Philip Morton Shand and Edith Marguerite Harrington.1,3 He married Hon. Rosalind Maud Cubitt, daughter of Roland Calvert Cubitt, 3rd Baron Ashcombe and Sonia Rosemary Keppel, on 2 January 1946.1 He died on 11 June 2006 at age 89.2
He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was commissioned in 1937 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, in the service of the 12th Royal Lancers.2 He fought in the Second World War, where h was wounded, and became a POW in 1942.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1942 in the 12th Royal Lancers.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1942 and bar.1 He retired from the military in 1947.2 He was Joint Master of the Foxhunds for Southdown between 1956 and 1975.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Sussex in 1962.2 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex between 1974 and 1992.1
