     John Furnivall Thompson is the son of Joseph Thompson.1 He married Helen Marianne Hutchinson, daughter of William Henry Heap Hutchinson and Helena Julia Chamot, on 7 January 1915.1
     He had four sons, with three killed in action in the Second World War, and a daughter.1

     He was commissioned with the rank of officer, in the service of the B.S.A. Co.1 He was he went to Fort Salisbury with the Pioneers under Cecil Rhodes.1 He fought in the Boer War.1
