     He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.1 He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Northumberland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded and became a POW.1
