He married Clara Thornhill, daughter of Thomas Thornhill and Clara Peirse, on 20 November 1855 at Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. He died on 28 June 1898 at age 66.

His name was legally changed to William Capel Clarke-Thornhill by Royal Licence, under the terms of the will of his wife's grandfather, Thomas Thornhill. He gained the rank of Captain in the 23rd Regiment of Fusiliers. He lived at Rushton Hall, Kettering, Northamptonshire, England.1
