Lt.-Gen. Sir Arthur Purves Phayre was born on 7 May 1812 at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.1 He was the son of Richard Phayre and Mary Ridgeway.1 He died on 14 December 1885 at age 73 at 12 Goldsmith Terrace, Queensborough Road, Bray, Berkshire, England, unmarried.1
He was commissioned in August 1828, in the service of the 7th Bengal Native Infantry.1 He held the office of Chief Commissioner of Burma between 1862 and 1867.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1863.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Star of India (K.C.S.I.) in 1867.1 He held the office of Governor of Mauritius between 1874 and 1878.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1877.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1877.1
