     He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902, where he was mentioned in dispatches and was severely wounded.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment.1 He fought in the North Nigeria Campaign between 1906 and 1907, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1
