John Gwyn was born circa 1756 at Drumskellan, County Donegal, Ireland.2 He was the son of William Gwyn and Margaret (?)2 He died on 1 August 1829.1,2
He was bequeathed a large sum of money to found a charitable endowment in Derry known as the Gwynne Institute, for the education of boys whose parents could not afford to give them a suitable education, the money to be distributed equally among Protestants of the Established Church, Presbyterians and Roman Catholics.1
