Walter James Hore-Ruthven, 9th Lord Ruthven of Freeland was born on 14 June 1838.2 He was the son of William Hore and Dells Honoria Lowen.2 He married Lady Caroline Annesley Gore, daughter of Philip Yorke Gore, 4th Earl of Arran of the Arran Islands and Elizabeth Marianne Napier, on 21 August 1869.3 He died on 28 February 1921 at age 82.2
He was given the name of Walter James Hore at birth.2 In 1853 his name was legally changed to Walter James Hore-Ruthven.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Rifle Brigade.2 He fought in the Crimean War.2 He succeeded as the 9th Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S., 1651] on 13 February 1864.1 In December 1881 bankrupt in the sum of £3,387.2 In 1882 the Lord Clerk Register of Scotland had denied the Lordship's very existence before a Select Commitee.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Herefordshire.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Perthshire.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Perthshire.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lanarkshire.2 He fought in the First World War, with the Rifle Brigade, even though aged 76.2 He was King's Messenger.2 He was awarded the Grand Officer, Crown of Belgium in 1915.2 He was created 1st Baron Ruthven of Gowrie, of Gowrie, co. Thomas Sopwith was born on 2 July 1838 at St. Marys Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England.2 He was the son of Thomas Sopwith and Jane Scott.3 He married Lydia Gertrude Messiter, daughter of Henry Messiter and Susan Ellen Coulson, on 1 March 1866 at Parish Church, Wincanton, Somerset, England.3 He died in 1898 at Lisle of Lismore, Oban, Scotland, accidentally killed when a shotgun held by his son Thomas went off.3
