Gilleonan Macneil, 9th of Barra was the son of Roderick Macneil, 8th of Barra and unknown daughter Maclean.2 He married, secondly, Finevola MacLeod, daughter of Ian 'Borb' MacLeod, 6th of MacLeod and unknown Douglas.2 He was murdered at Coll, Scotland, by John 'Garbh' Maclean, 1st of Coll.1
In 1427 he received, as Gilleounan Rodrici Murchardi Makneill, from Alexander, Lord of the Isles, a charter of the Isle of Barra and the lands of Baegastallis in Wist (Boisdale in South Uist.)1

Roderick Macneil, 10th of Barra is the son of Gilleonan Macneil, 9th of Barra and Finevola MacLeod.2
He was was befriended by Iain Garbh Maclean and lived with him and their mother at Kisimul Castle.1 In 1460 He took an important part in the Lordship of the Isles and accompanied the Lord of the Isles on several expeditions against the Orkneys, the greatest of which took place in 1460.1

Gilleonan Macneil, 11th of Barra is the son of Roderick Macneil, 10th of Barra.2
In 1482 he joined John, Lord of the Isles against John's son, Angus Og, who defeated John's force at the Battle of Bloody Bay.1 On 12 November 1495 after the fall of the Lordship of the Isles he received a Crown charter confirming the 1427 Lord of the Isles charter to his grandfather.1

Gilleonan Macneil, 12th of Barra is the son of Gilleonan Macneil, 11th of Barra.2
In 1537 he was involved in numerous rebellions against the Crown and was among the many chiefs kidnapped by King James V and retained in prison until the death of the King in 1543.1

On 28 July 1545 he sat in the Council of the Isles which on proclaimed allegiance to King Henry VIII in a document beginning ‘Quhairfor, your Lordships sall considder we have beyne auld enemys to the realme of Scotland.1' On 29 March 1579 he along with other chiefs was still causing trouble according to a complaint by the Bishop of the Isles.1
