Lt.-Col. Hector Maclaine, 12th of Lochbuie was born circa 1649.1 He was the son of Lachlan Maclaine, 11th of Lochbuie and Margaret Maclean.2 He married, secondly, Katherine Maclean, daughter of Rt. Rev. Hector Maclean of Knock.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Campbell, daughter of Colin Campbell, 5th of Lochnell and Anne Campbell, on 12 November 1669.1 He died in 1706.2,3
On 2 March 1670 he received a charter of his lands, his father having resigned them in life-interest.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 21 March 1689 in the Argyllshire Regiment, as 2nd i/c under Colonel Sir John Maclean of Duart.1 In June 1689 he opened the Jacobite campaign in by defeating a cavalry unit under Sir Thomas Livingstone at Knockbreck in Badenoch.2 On 22 October 1690 he was forced to surrender Moy Castle to the Earl of Argyll, who placed it under the charge of Colin Campbell of Braeglen , but was restored to him in 1697.1 He gained the rank of Battle of Killiecrankie.1
