General Edward Herbert Maxwell was the son of Lt.-Col. Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 5th Bt. and Catharine Fordyce.2 He married Agnes Morgan Hay, daughter of Rear-Admiral James Hay and Mary Stewart, on 20 November 1865.1 He died on 24 February 1885.2

Lt.-Col. Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 5th Bt. was born on 5 March 1779.1 He was the son of Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 4th Bt. and Katharine Blair.1 He married Catharine Fordyce, daughter of John Fordyce of Ayton and Catharine Maxwell, on 23 April 1803.1 He died on 22 August 1838 at age 59.1
He fought in the Battle of Corunna in 1809, where he lost an arm.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Maxwell, of Monreith, co. Wigtown [N.S., 1681] on 17 February 1812.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 26th Foot.1
