He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.2 He fought in the Burma Campaign between 1891 and 1892.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, where he was mentioned in despatches twice.2 He fought in the First World War, in France and Salonika, and was mentioned in despatches twice and wounded.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1916.2
