James Erskine, Lord Alva was born on 20 June 1722.1 He was the son of Charles Erskine of Alva, Lord Tinwald and Grizel Grierson.1 He married, secondly, Jean Stirling, daughter of John Stirling.1 He married Margaret Macguire, daughter of Hugh Macguire, on 19 June 1749.1 He died on 13 May 1796 at age 73.1
