Sir Gideon Murray, Lord Elibank was the son of Sir Andrew Murray of Blackbarony and Grizel Bethune.2 A contract for the marriage of Sir Gideon Murray, Lord Elibank and Margaret Pentland was signed in June 1587.1 He died on 28 June 1621.1
On 15 March 1594/95 he acquired Elibank or Eliburne, Selkirkshire, by charter under the Great Seal.1 He was appointed Knight in 1605.1 He was Commissioner for the Borders between 1605 and 1617.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1610.1 He was one of the New Octavians controlling Scottish Treasury business in 1611.1 He held the office of Lord of the Articles for the small Barons in 1612.1 He held the office of Treasurer Depute in 1612.1 He held the office of a Lord of Session between 1613 and 1621.1 He was styled as Lord Elibank [Scottish Law Lord] between 1613 and 1621.1

Margaret Pentland is the daughter of Dionis Pentland.2 A contract for the marriage of Margaret Pentland and Sir Gideon Murray, Lord Elibank was signed in June 1587.1
From June 1587, her married name became Murray. The marriage was uncompleted before the kirk, none the less ruled lawful and the issue legitimate by Edinburgh Commissaries on 4 June 1601.1

Sir Patrick Murray, 1st Lord Elibank was the son of Sir Gideon Murray, Lord Elibank and Margaret Pentland.2 He married by contract, firstly, Margaret Hamilton, daughter of Alexander Hamilton, 9th of Innerwick and Margaret Whytelaw, on 21 August 1610.1 He married by contract, secondly, Elizabeth Dundas, daughter of Sir James Dundas of Arniston, on 24 January 1616/17.1 He married, thirdly, Helen Lindsay, daughter of Bernard Lindsay of Lockhill, on 16 January 1627/28.1 He married, fourthly, Agnes Nicolson, daughter of Thomas Nicolson, on 11 December 1636.1 A contract for the marriage of Sir Patrick Murray, 1st Lord Elibank and Katherine Weir was signed on 24 March 1637/38.1 He died on 12 November 1649.1
He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1605 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Gray's Inn.1 He held the office of Keeper of Caerlaverock Castle in 1611.1 He was created 1st Baronet Murray, of Etrick Forest, co. Selkirk [Nova Scotia] on 16 May 1628.1 He was created 1st Lord Elibank, of Etrick Forest, co. Selkirk [Scotland] on 18 March 1643, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.1 In 1646/47 he was one of the six peers who opposed the handing over of King Charles I to the English Parliament.1
