     He was educated at Eastman's Royal Navy College, Winchester, Hampshire, England^G.¹ He graduated from Birmingham University, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England^G, with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded.¹ He was a mining engineer at South Africa^G.¹ He retired from the military in 1927, with the rank of officer, late of the South Wales Borderers.¹
