Lt.-Gen. Sir John Sharman Fowler was born on 29 July 1864.1 He was the son of Robert Fowler and Laetitia Mabella Coddington.2 He married Mary Olivia Henrietta Brooke, daughter of John Monck Brooke and Edwina Virginia Joanna Fitzpatrick, on 10 August 1904.1 He died on 20 September 1939 at age 75.1
He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1895.1 He fought in the Tirah Expeditionary Force, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the Chitral Campaign, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the Boer War, in the South Africa Field Force, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1918.1 He was General Officer Commanding of the Forces in China between 1922 and 1925.1 He was Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals between 1923 and 1934.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1926.1 He retired from the military in 1928, with the rank of Lieutenant-General, late of the Royal Engineers.1
