Brig.-Gen. John William Vincent Carroll was born on 12 July 1869.1 He was the son of Frederick Maxwell Carroll and Mary Fitzgerald.2 He married Barbara Mary Woodroffe, daughter of James Tisdall Woodroffe, on 6 August 1902.1 He died on 16 January 1927 at age 57.1
He was educated at The Oratory, London, EnglandG.1 He was commissioned in 1891, in the service of the Norfolk Regiment.1 Between 1895 and 1899 he served in West Africa and North Nigeria.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901, in Mounted Infantry.1 He was Commandant of the Mounted Infantry, Egypt in 1909.1 He was Commander of the Mounted Infantry, South Africa in 1910.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was commander of the 7th (Service) Battalion, Norfolk Regiment between 1914 and 1915.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916.1 He was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of Russia 4th class.1 He was awarded the St. George's Cross 4th class.1 He was commander of the Russian Forces at Morjegosskaria in 1919.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1919.1
