Richard Baxter Townshend was born on 8 March 1846.1 He was the son of Reverend Chambré Corker Townsend and Eliza Oliver.2 He married Letitia Jane Dorothea Baker, daughter of Reverend Ralph Bourne Baker and Frances Crofton Singer, on 28 July 1881.1 He died on 28 April 1923 at age 77, without issue.1
He assumed the spelling of Townshend in lieu of Townsend.1 He was educated at Repton School, Repton, Derbyshire, EnglandG.1 He was a miner and rancher in West America.1 He wrote the book Lone Pine.1 He edited the book An Officer of the Long Parliament, biography of Colonel Richard Townsend.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1893 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He graduated from Wadham College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was a Tutor at Wadham College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was the subject of one of Elgar's Elligma Variations (together with his brother-in-law William Meath Baker.)1
