James Oliphant was born on 23 August 1796 at Perthshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of Ebenezer Oliphant and Mary Stirling.3 He married, firstly, Lucy Maidman, daughter of George Maidman, in 1824.4 He married, secondly, Sophia Ann Trewman, daughter of General T. T. Trewman, in 1836.1 He died in 1881.1
