Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby was born on 6 July 1783.1 He was the son of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough and Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer.1 He married Lady Emily Charlotte Bathurst, daughter of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst of Bathurst and Lady Georgina Lennox, on 16 March 1825.1 He died on 11 January 1837 at age 53.1

Sir Egerton Brydges wrote "he seems too much to have indulged in a life of indolence, for his friends speak of him as aman of superior talents, of which, however, he has not given the world much opportunity to form a judgment. He is said to be sagacious and sarcastic; full of acute sense and cutting humour."3
Lord Greville recorded that "he was a very amiable man and with a good understanding, though his talents were from brilliant. A High Churchman and a High Tory, bu t a cool politician, a bad speaker, a good writer, greatly averse to changes but unwillingly acquiescing in many. He was nervous and reserved, with a good deal of humour, and habitually a jester."3 According to Gibbs, "Lady Louisa Stuart says that he was the last man to wear a pigtail, and that in 1828 he cut it off, and sent it round in an official box to his ministerial collegues."3
