He was the son of Ernst Ludwig Emil Graf von Rantzau and Carmelita Luise Henriette Laila Gräfin von Noer. He married Ehrengard Martha von der Schulenburg on 20 June 1944 at Neumühle, Germany. He died in December 1945 at age 50 at Caucasus, RussiaG.
