Lady Anne Vaughan1

     Lady Anne Vaughan was the daughter of John Vaughan, 3rd Earl of Carbery and Lady Anne Saville.1 She married Lt.-Gen. Sir Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton, son of Charles Powlett, 2nd Duke of Bolton and Frances Ramsden, on 21 July 1713.1 She and Lt.-Gen. Sir Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton were separated.1 She died on 20 September 1751, without issue.1 Her will was proven (by probate) in June 1752.1
     Her married name became Powlett. After her marriage, Lady Anne Vaughan was styled as Duchess of Bolton on 21 January 1721/22.
     Lady Montague wrote that she was "educated in solitude with some choice books, by a saint-like governess: crammed with virtue and good qualities, she thought it impossible not to find gratitude, though she failed to give passion; an dupon this she threw away her estate, was despised by her husband and laughed at by the public."1

     John Vaughan, 3rd Earl of Carbery was baptised on 18 July 1639 at St. Dunstan's-in-the-West Church, London, EnglandG.3 He was the son of Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Carbery and Frances Altham.3,4 He married, firstly, Mary Brown, daughter of George Brown.3 He married, secondly, Lady Anne Saville, daughter of George Saville, 1st Marquess of Halifax and Lady Dorothy Spencer, on 10 August 1682 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Covent Garden, London, EnglandG.3 He died on 16 January 1712/13 at age 73 at Chelsea, London, EnglandG, without surviving male issue.3 His will (dated 25 May 1710) was proven (by probate) on 2 February 1712/13.5
     He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1656.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carmarthen Borough between 1661 and 1679.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in April 1661.3 He was styled as Lord Vaughan between 1667 and 1686.3 He was Colonel of the Regiment of Foot from 1673 to 1674.3 He held the office of Governor of Jamaica between 1675 and 1678.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carmarthen between 1679 and 1681.3 He held the office of Lord of the Admiralty from 1683 to 1684.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carmarthen between 1685 and 1687.3 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 28 January 1684/85.3 He held the office of President of the Royal Society between 1686 and 1689.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Carbery, co. Cork [I., 1628] on 3 December 1686.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Vaughan of Emlyn, co. Carmarthen [E., 1643] on 3 December 1686.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Vaughan of Mullengar, co. Westmeath [I., 1621] on 3 December 1686.3 He held the office of Lord of the Admiralty from 1689 to 1690.3
     On his death, his titles became extinct.5

     Lady Anne Saville was born in 1663.2 She was the daughter of George Saville, 1st Marquess of Halifax and Lady Dorothy Spencer.1 She married John Vaughan, 3rd Earl of Carbery, son of Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Carbery and Frances Altham, on 10 August 1682 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Covent Garden, London, EnglandG.2 She died circa January 1689/90.2 She was buried on 23 January 1689/90 at St. Andrew's Church, Holborn, London, EnglandG.2

     Lavinia Fenton was born circa 1708.1 She was the daughter of Lieutenant unknown Beswick.1 She married Lt.-Gen. Sir Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton, son of Charles Powlett, 2nd Duke of Bolton and Frances Ramsden, on 20 October 1751 at Aachen, GermanyG.1 She died on 17 January 1760 at West Combe Park, Kent, EnglandG.3 She was buried on 3 February 1760 at Greenwich, London, EnglandG.3 Her will was proven (by probate) on 7 February 1760.3
     She was also known as Lavinia Beswick.1 In 1726 she performed in The Orphan, as Monimia.1 She and Lt.-Gen. Sir Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton were associated circa 1728.1 In 1728 she performed in The Beggar's Opera, as Polly Peacham.1 After her marriage, Lavinia Fenton was styled as Duchess of Bolton on 20 October 1751. From 20 October 1751, her married name became Powlett. Her last will was dated 6 December 1759. She has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4

     Charles Powlett, 5th Duke of Bolton was born circa 1718.1 He was the son of Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton and Catherine Parry.1 He died on 5 July 1765 at Grosvenor Square, London, EnglandG, from suicide by shooting himself, unmarried.1 He was buried on 10 July 1765 at BasingG.1 His will (dated 4 June 1763 to 3 October 1764) was proven (by probate) on 12 July 1765.1
     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Lymington between 1741 and 1754.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1745 in the British Army.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 27 August 1753.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)      Lady Mary Henrietta Powlett was the daughter of Admiral Harry Powlett, 6th Duke of Bolton and Mary Nunn.1 She married John Montagu, 5th Earl of Sandwich, son of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich and Dorothy Fane, on 25 April 1772.2 She died on 30 March 1779.2
     Her married name became Montagu.
