He was educated at the Lycée of Caen, Caen, FranceG.1 He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, Lancashire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at St. John's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1880 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was chairman of the Surrey Quarter Sessions between 1894 and 1910.1 He was appointed King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1904.1 He held the office of Recorder of Guildford between 1904 and 1915.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Surrey, Kingston Division between 1906 and 1918.1 He held the office of Bencher of the Inner Temple in 1912.1 He graduated from St. John's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1912 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was appointed Knight in 1915.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General between 1915 and 1916.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 16 June 1915.1 He held the office of Secretary of State for Home Affairs between 1916 and 1919.1 He was created 1st Viscount Cave, of Richmond, co. Surrey [U.K.] on 14 November 1918.1 He was chairman of the Rhodesia Commission in 1919.3 He held the office of Lord of Appeal between 1919 and 1922.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1921.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by St. John's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1924.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1925.1
On the day of his death, his advancement to an earldom was announced, although this creation had not passed the Great Seal.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4

Anne Estella Sarah Penfold Mathews, Countess Cave of Richmond was the daughter of William Withey Mathews and Jane Wallas Penfold.1,2 She married George Cave, 1st and last Viscount Cave, son of Thomas Cave and Elizabeth Shallcrass, on 6 January 1885 at All Saints Church, Margaret Street, London, EnglandG.1 She died on 7 January 1938 at St. Anne's, Burnham, Somerset, EnglandG, without issue.1 She was buried on 8 January 1938 at Berrow, Somerset, EnglandG.3
She wrote the book Ant Antics.3 She wrote the book Memoirs of Old Richmond.3 She wrote the book Odds and Ends.3 She was awarded the Medal of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium.4 From 6 January 1885, her married name became Cave.1 After her marriage, Anne Estella Sarah Penfold Mathews, Countess Cave of Richmond was styled as Viscountess Cave on 14 November 1918. She was created 1st Countess Cave of Richmond [U.K.] on 8 May 1928, in lieu of the Earldom announced for her husband, which he did not live to receive.3
