Sir James Innes, 12th of that Ilk was the son of Sir Robert Innes, 11th of that Ilk and unknown daughter Douglas.2 He married Janet Gordon, daughter of Alexander Gordon, 1st Earl of Huntly and unknown Cumming.2 He married, secondly, Margaret Culane circa 1473.2 He died circa 1491.2
He was Esquire of the Body to King James III.2 He was also known as Alexander Innes of Innes.3 He fought in the Battle of Blackness in 1488.2
