William Turnour Thomas Poulett1

M, #183077, b. 15 December 1849, d. circa 1908
Last Edited=19 May 2018
William Turnour Thomas Poulett was born apparently illegitimately on 15 December 1849 at Cottage Grove, Southsea, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Captain William Turnour Granville and Elizabeth Lavinia Newman.1,2 He married Lydia Ann Shippy on 6 December 1869.1 He died circa 1908 at Holborn Union Infirmary, Holborn, London, EnglandG, from heart disease, listed as simply 'William Turnour'.1 He was buried at Finchley, London, EnglandG.1
He styled himself as 'Viscount Hinton', and claime the titel of the Earl of Poulett after the 6th Earl's death.1 On 3 July 1905 the House of Lord's Committee for Privileges rejected his claims to the title of Earl of Poulett, on the grounds of his bastardy, even though he was born in wedlock. This is an interesting case of the House of Lords rejecting the ancient doctrine of 'pater est quem nuptiae demonstrant', which is that any child born in wedlock is always assumed to be fathered by the husband. While his mother claimed that he was the son of the Earl, no one including the Earl believed this.1 He lived at Medcalf Place, Pentonville Road, London, EnglandG.1
