John Hamilton of Bargany1

     John Hamilton of Bargany was born on 4 February 1715.1 He was the son of Sir Robert Dalrymple and Johanna Hamilton.1 He married, firstly, Lady Anne Wemyss, daughter of James Wemyss, 5th Earl of Wemyss and Janet Charteris, after 25 April 1746.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie of Coyisfield, in 1772.1 He died on 12 February 1796 at age 81, without issue.1
     He was given the name of John Dalrymple at birth.1 He was a practising advocate in 1735.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wigton Burghs in 1754.1 His name was legally changed to John Hamilton on inheriting Bargany after protracted litigation.1
