John Poynder Dickson-Poynder, 1st and last Baron Islington was born on 31 October 1866.2 He was the son of Rear-Admiral John Bourmaster Dickson and Sarah Matilda Poynder.1 He married Anne Beauclerk Dundas, daughter of Henry Robert Duncan Dundas and Hon. Catherine Anne Carrington Napier, on 30 September 1896.2 He died on 6 December 1936 at age 70, without male issue.2
He was given the name of John Poynder Dickson at birth.1 He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Dickson [U.K., 1802] on 22 June 1884.1 He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 On 12 January 1888 his name was legally changed to John Poynder Dickson-Poynder by Royal Licence.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1890.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wiltshire, Chippenham Division between 1892 and 1910.1 He held the office of Member of the London County Council between 1898 and 1904.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901.2 He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1910 and 1912.3 He was created 1st Baron Islington, of Islington, co.
