He was Page to Ralph Montagu, Ambassador to France (afterwads Duke of Montagu) circa 1671 at FranceG.1 He was commissioned with the rank of Private, in the service of the 3rd Troop of Guards.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Peterborough's Regiment of Horse.1 He was Colonel of the 3rd (King's Own) Dragoons between 1703 and 1732 serving with great gallantry in Flanders and Spain.1 On 23 June 1703 he purchased the estates of Baramount and Killahy, both in County Kilkenny.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in 1705.1 He fought in the Battle of Almanza on 25 April 1707, where he helped to mitigate the English defeat.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1708.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1709/10.1 He fought in the Battle of Almenara on 27 July 1710, where he was severely wounded.1 He was Envoy to the Court of Vienna in 1715.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Whitchurch between 1715 and 1722.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the forces in North Britain between 1716 and 1725.1 He held the office of Governor of Minorca between 1716 and 1732.1 He was created 1st Baron Carpenter of Killaghy, co. Kilkenny [Ireland] on 29 May 1719.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Westminster between 1722 and 1727.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
