Captain Edward Christian was born in 1590 at The Flatt, Maughold, Isle of ManG.2 He was the son of Reverend John Christian.2 He married Elizabeth Maycott, daughter of Sir Cavalier Maycott, on 19 January 1625/26 at St. Mary's, London, EnglandG.2 He died on 2 January 1659/60 at Peel Castle, Peel, Isle of ManG, in prison.2 He was buried at Kirk Maughold, Isle of ManG.2
He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy.2 He held the office of Governor of the Isle of Man between 1628 and 1639.1 Edward, of Ballakilley and Loughmola, went to sea at an early age in the service of "the East Indy Co". Was next in Court in the suite of the Duke of Buckingham, and accompanied him and Prince Charles to Spain on their romantic journey thither, to woo the Infanta in 1623. After that was appointed to "the Bonaventura", frigate of 37 guns. On returning to the Island, he was appointed Governor of the Island and Commandant of the Manx forces. After some years he fell into disfavour with the Earl of Derby by espousing the cause of the much oppressed people, and was imprisoned for life for "tumultuously and seditiously behaving himself", and was also fined 1000 Marks.
[CR][TAB]Edward was one of the staunchest patriots the Island has ever had, and what he fought for was achieved in 1704, years after his death, with the passing of the Act of Settlement, often referred to as the Manx Magna Carta.
[CR][TAB]He was buried at Maughold, his birthplace, where his son erected a granite sun-dial to his memory, which is still to be seen in front of the church.
[CR][TAB]His descendants owned the Ballakilley Estate until the beginning of the 20th century.2
