He was commissioned on 20 December 1824, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Additional Lieutenant on 14 August 1839, serving on board H.M.S. Princess Charlotte.1 He fought in the siege of Acre in 1840, for which he received a medal for distinguished service.1 He gained the rank of Commander on 9 November 1846.1
