Richard Charteris was born on 25 July 1822.2 He was the son of Francis Wemyss-Charteris, 9th Earl of Wemyss and Lady Louisa Bingham.2 He married Lady Margaret Butler, daughter of Richard Butler, 2nd Earl of Glengall and Margaret Lauretta Mellish, on 2 August 1858.2 He died on 16 March 1874 at age 51.2
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) of County Tipperary.2

     Lady Margaret Butler was the daughter of Richard Butler, 2nd Earl of Glengall and Margaret Lauretta Mellish. She married Lt.-Col. Hon. Richard Charteris, son of Francis Wemyss-Charteris, 9th Earl of Wemyss and Lady Louisa Bingham, on 2 August 1858.1 She died on 21 February 1915.1
     Her married name became Charteris.

     Captain Edmund Butler Charteris was born on 28 September 1870.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. Hon. Richard Charteris and Lady Margaret Butler.1 He married, firstly, Lilian Clare Richards, daughter of Andrew Knox Richards, in 1918.1 He and Lilian Clare Richards were divorced in 1921.1 He married, secondly, Dorothy Alice Dean, daughter of James Dean, on 20 March 1939.1 He died on 2 July 1939 at age 68.1
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Horse Guards.1 He was Private Secretary to the Secretary of the War Office.1 He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur.1
