Gmelinite-Na is one of the rarer zeolites but the most common member of the gmelinite series, gmelinite-Ca, gmelinite-K and gmelinite-Na. It is closely related to the very similar mineral chabazite .
Calcium-dominating Gmelinite is called Gmelinite-Ca, and is the most prevalent form of this series. Sodium-dominating Gmelinite, defined as Gmelinite-Na, and potassium-dominating Gmelinite, defined as Gmelinite-K, are both rare.

In 1997, gmelinite was split into Gmelinite-Ca, Gmelinite-Na and Gmelinite-K. Gmelinite was originally described from Montecchio Maggiore, Vicenza Province, Veneto, Italy and Little Deerpark Quarry, Glenarm, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK.
Between like pairs of double 6-membered rings is a gmelinite cage (GME). Six columns of double 6-membered rings and gmelinite cages parallel to the c-axis surround a 12-member ring channel (aperture 7.0 Å). Analyses of T-O bond lengths show that there is no (Si,Al) order in the 6-rings.
