Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book demonstrates that the adoption of the Blue Flag program in a country can be an important strategy not only for the sustainable management of beaches, but also for the sustainable development of the environment in which it is framed. It describes the origins of the Foundation for Environmental Education, first as a European foundation that, over the years has developed into an international foundation with over 100 members in 81 countries. The book addresses the limitations of Blue Flag as a tool for sustainable development measured through a set of common sustainability indicators. It explains the disparity between academics’ expectations of Blue Flag’s effectiveness and the actual role beach certifications play in promoting sustainability. The book discusses the relationship between the number of Blue Flags a destination has, its degree of tourism development and the standard of living of its residents.
