Other Site Characteristics
A mais importante área húmida do sul do país, pela sua diversidade e complexidade estrutural. Inclui uma faixa bem conservada de ilhas-barreira, que asseguram a protecção de uma vasta área de sapais, bancos de vasa e areias.

4.2 Quality and importance

Constitui uma das áreas mais importantes do país para as aves migratórias, com particular destaque para limícolas, como a tarambola-cinzenta (Pluvialis squatarola) e a seixoeira (Calidris canutus), e alguns anatídeos. A avifauna nidificante é também muito importante, destacando-se a presença de importantes populações reprodutoras de garça-branca-pequena (Egretta garzetta), caimão (Porphyrio porphyrio), perna-longa (Himantopus himantopus) e borrelho-de-coleira-interrompida (Charadrius alexandrinus).
