  • NP: in case that a habitat type no longer exists in the site enter: x (optional)
  • Cover: decimal values can be entered
  • Caves: for habitat types 8310, 8330 (caves) enter the number of caves if estimated surface is not available.
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation)

  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics
The site is a saltpan located in the bay near the town of Nin. Fields around the pools are used by over 280 species of birds, mostly migratory birds (e.g. Golden Plover), wintering (Common Redshenk, Grey Plover, Dunlin, Eurasian Curlew) and two species which and breeding here (Kentish Plover and Black Winged Stilt). Mediterranean Killifish (Aphanius fasciatus) is present in the Nin salt pans where inhabits channels that bring seawater into the pools to evaporate. It enters the system when pools are filled with water. In the channels flocks of large specimens live as opposed to sites in Nin mud near the salt pans where sampling recorded mostly young individuals. Nin mud is mainly threatened by presence of a large number of tourists (sandy beaches and mud used for medicinal reasons). Prevalence of people has already resulted in the degradation of plant cover. Plans to build exclusive hotels and the tourism based on the exploitation of mud could have a major negative impact on the habitat that is currently in very good condition. With the regulation of access and use of mud it could be easily restored to excellent preservation. Mediterranean Killifish is present in large numbers and successfully reproduce.

4.2 Quality and importance

Important site for Mediterranean and thermo-Atlantic halophilous scrubs (Sarcocornetea fruticosi) and Salicornia and other annuals colonizing mud and sand; these two habitat types occure together on the site, with Salicornia represented in much smaller area - important site for Aphanius fasciatus
